No Competition on Opening Day of Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

Published on 10/04/2022

BELLS BEACH, Victoria, Australia (Sunday, April 10, 2022) – The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the fourth stop on the World Surf League (WSL) 2022 Championship Tour (CT), has been called OFF for its opening day due to small surf on offer. Competition organizers will reconvene tomorrow, Monday, April 11, at 7:15 a.m. AEST to reassess the conditions and make the next call.

“We are excited to be back in Victoria for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, WSL SVP of Tours and Head of Competition. “Everyone loves the Bells Bowl and Winkipop, and we cannot wait to get the competition started. Unfortunately for today, we’ve got small surf on offer and will be calling the competition off. We expect to have an uptick in swell with a bit of wind, so we are looking to possibly start tomorrow or the next day. We will come back tomorrow to check the conditions again and update everyone on the call.”

We Are One Ocean: Coastal Restoration at Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

For the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the WSL teamed up on a We Are One Ocean coastal restoration project with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Surf Coast Shire Council, Shiseido, and local surfers from Surfers Appreciating the Natural Environment (SANE) to work together in healing the landscape. The restored areas and cliff tops are home to a wide variety of animals including echidnas, snakes, lizards, and the endangered Otways Rufous Bristlebird and Swamp Antechinus. The restoration includes planting, watering, and mulching in the area. This project aligns with the implementation of the Wadawurrung Country plan, the Coastal and Marine Management plan, and the UN Decade on Restoration.
