Foundation Surf Coaching Course
The Foundation Surf Coach (formerly Level 1 Surf Coach) is the base level qualification to deliver Surf tuition within Australia.
The course educates the coach on how to introduce beginners and novices to surfing in a safe, fun and supportive manner that goes beyond the simple instruction of skill.
First and foremost, coaches will learn the importance of safety and how to provide a safe environment through their knowledge of the ocean and their ability to identify and manage risks and hazards.
Progression Surf Coaching Course
The Progression Surf Coach (formerly Level 2 Surf Coach) is the next step in the coaching qualification pathway of Surfing Australia’s Coaching Framework.
The course educates the coach on working with intermediate and advanced surfers to further develop and advance their skills both in and out of the water.
Progression Coaches support surfers in their technical, physical and psychological development as they transition to more advanced levels of surfing and for some, a competitive career.
Club Coaching Course
The Club Coaching course is targeted at experienced surfers who want to run coaching sessions within their Boardrider Club or High School. This course is designed for coaches to support intermediate surfers in and out of the water, particularly those who are competing at a club or school level or higher.
This course will provide you with the tools to support surfers on their journey, covering topics like mental performance in competition, inclusive coaching, training out of the water, heat drill simulations, coaching tools, what judges are looking for and safety.
Foundation SUP Coaching Course
The Foundation SUP Coach (formerly Flat Water SUP Coach) is the base level qualification to deliver Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) tuition within Australia.
The course educates the coach on how to introduce beginners and novices to SUP in a safe, fun and supportive manner that goes beyond the simple instruction of skill.
First and foremost, coaches will learn the importance of safety and how to provide a safe environment through their knowledge of waterways and their ability to identify and manage risks and hazards.

About this Course
The Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Coach Course (formerly Level 1 Surf Coach) is the entry level surf coaching qualification to deliver surfing tuition in Victoria.
The course is designed to educate coaches on how to introduce beginners and novices to surfing in a safe, fun and supportive manner that goes beyond the simple instruction of skill.
First and foremost, coaches will learn the importance of safety and how to provide a safe environment through their knowledge of the ocean and their ability to identify and manage risks and hazards.
Course Structure
The Foundation Surf Coaching Course consists of an online learning component and 20 hours of assessed practical experience signed off by a Surfing Australia Coach Assessor, which can be found within select Surfing Australia affiliated Surf Schools.

Course Pre-requisites
In order to gain this accreditation participants must be at least 16 years of age.
Accreditation Requirements
To achieve accreditation as a Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Coach, participants will need to complete the following courses and have attained the following supporting credentials:
- Completion of the Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Coaching Course in the ‘My Learning Centre’ portal of your Surfing Australia profile
- Completion of 20 hours of assessed surf coaching to be signed off by a Surfing Australia Progression or Elite Coach Assessor
- Completion of the ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport Induction’ course located in the ‘My Learning Centre’ portal of your Surfing Australia profile
- Current Surfing Victoria CORE membership – purchased through your Surfing Australia profile
The following mandatory supporting credentials are to be completed with external providers:
- Ocean Safety Qualification* (for full details of approved Ocean Safety Qualification providers CLICK HERE)
- Provide First Aid Qualification (Course Code: HLTAID011)
- Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Qualification (Course Code: HLTAID009) – (this qualification is included in a Provide First Aid qualification, but must be renewed every 12 months from the date of completion or issue)
- Working With Children Check or Victorian Institute of Teaching Registration**
* Please note: Surfers Rescue courses offered by state surfing organisations do not qualify as a recognised Ocean Safety qualification

Progression Surf Coaching Course
About this Course
The Surfing Australia Progression Surf Coach Course (formerly Level 2 Surf Coach) is the next step for surf coaches on Surfing Australia’s Coaching Framework with a focus on intermediate and advanced surfers to further develop their skills both in and out of the water.
The Progression Surf Coach course delivers education and training on how to support and work with surfers in their technical, physical and psychological development as they transition to more advanced levels of surfing and for some, a competitive career.
Course Structure
The Progression Surf Coaching Course consists of an online learning component and 20 hours of assessed practical coaching experience signed off by a Surfing Australia Progression or Elite Surf Coach.
Course Pre-requisites
Before participants can enrol in the Progression Surf Coach Course, they must have held a Foundation Surf Coach Accreditation or International Surfing Association (ISA) equivalent for a minimum of 12 months.
In becoming a Progression Coach, participants will be required to demonstrate their surfing ability and knowledge of the surf at a minimum intermediate level. This may include:
- Being able to consistently perform manoeuvres in the correct section with control such as: bottom turn, top turn and cut-back on both forehand and backhand
- Demonstrate confidence in a range of conditions, especially in challenging conditions over 3 foot
- Demonstrate ability to read the surf conditions at various types of surf breaks and possess a detailed understanding of the ocean and its risks and hazards
This will be assessed by a Coach Assessor who holds a minimum of a Surfing Australia Progression Surf Coach Accreditation during the practical coaching component of the course.

Club Coaching Course Accreditation
About this Course
The Club Coaching course is targeted at club members and/or volunteers at Boardrider Clubs who are experienced surfers who want to run coaching sessions within their Boardrider Club. It also applies to teachers who run competitive sessions within their High School. This course is designed for coaches to support intermediate surfers in and out of the water, particularly those who are competing at a club or school level or higher.
This course will provide you with the tools to support surfers on their journey, covering topics like mental performance in competition, inclusive coaching, training out of the water, heat drill simulations, coaching tools, what judges are looking for and safety.
Please note: this course does not provide an accreditation to coach learn to surf at a Surf School. To gain employment at a surf school you must complete the L1 Foundation Surf Coaching course to be become an accredited Foundation Surf Coach.
Course Structure
The Club Coaching Course consists of an online learning component and 20 hours of practical coaching to be signed off by a specified supervisor nominated by your state, or within your Club as per the logbook requirements.
Course Pre-requisites
In order to gain this accreditation you must be at least 16 years of age. To be a Club Coach you must have spent adequate time in the surf, surf at an intermediate level or higher, and demonstrate your ability to read the conditions at various types of surf breaks and have a detailed understanding of the ocean and its hazards. This will be assessed by your mentoring coach during the practical coaching component of your course.
Surfing Australia Coaching Pathway
The Foundation (L1) Surf Coaching course is designed for coaching learn to surf and covers a different skill set. This is not a pre-requisite for the Club Coaching course.
The Progression (L2) Coaching course is the level above the Club Coaching course, where coaches give intermediate and advanced surfers the opportunity to further develop their skills both in and out of the water. This course enables coaches to support surfers in their technical, physical and psychological development as they transition to more advanced levels of surfing and for some, a competitive career.
Accreditation Requirements
To achieve accreditation as a Club Coach, you will need to complete the following courses and have the following supporting documents:
- Completion of the Surfing Australia Club Coaching Course in the Surfing Learning Centre (including your logbook)
- Completion of the Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport Induction course in the Surfing Learning Centre
- Current State membership – purchased through your Surfing Portal
The following mandatory credentials are completed with external providers:
- Ocean safety qualification (Surfers Rescue courses do not qualify for this qualification, full details of approved Ocean Safety providers are HERE)
- Provide first aid (HLTAID011)
- Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (HLTAID009) – this is included in HLTAID011 but has a 1 year expiry
- Working With Children Check*
