Surfing Australia offer Surf Judging courses for those passionate about Surfing events and competitions. These nationally-recognised courses are the perfect pathway to get involved and begin employment opportunities at Boardrider Club level competitions right up to National title events

Foundation Surf Judge –
Introduction to Judging Course

The Foundation Surf Judge (formerly Level 1) is the base level qualification for judging surfing at entry level competitions such as Boardrider Club rounds and events. 

This course is designed to educate and develop the judge’s technical knowledge required for judging at the Boardrider Club level. Upon completion of this course, judges will also have a sound understanding of the role of a judge as well as basic competition rules and scoring criteria across Shortboard, Longboard and SUP Surfing disciplines.

On completion of this course participants will achieve a Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Judge accreditation.

Progression Surf Judge –
Professional Judging Course

The Progression Surf Judge (formerly Level 2) is the next step on the pathway of Surfing Australia’s Judging framework. This qualification is required to judge at State and National title events as well as speciality competitions.

This professional surf judging accreditation includes course content developed from World Surf League (WSL), International Surfing Association (ISA) and Surfing Australia level competitions and events. It is designed to provide a more enhanced and comprehensive education on rules and regulations and well as understanding of the role of a Head Judge.

On completion of this course participants will achieve a Surfing Australia Progression Surf Judge accreditation.

Foundation Surf Judge – Introduction to Judging Course

About this Course
The Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Judge – Introduction to Judging Course (formerly Level 1) is a great introduction to surf judging as it offers a sound knowledge base of surfing competitions.

Course content covers understanding the role of a surf judge, what judges need to look for when scoring, basic competition rules and a comprehensive breakdown of all criteria in Shortboard, Longboard and SUP Surfing disciplines.

The course is tailored for those judging at the local Boardrider Club and regional competition level and is perfect for those looking to build some confidence and experience on their pathway in judging surfing competitions.

On completion of this course participants will achieve a Surfing Australia Foundation Judge Accreditation.

Beyond this, participants can progress to Surfing Australia’s Progression Surf Judge – Professional Judging Course and achieve the Progression Judge Accreditation and furthermore the Elite Judge Accreditation which is recognised by the International Surfing Association (ISA). 

Course Structure
The Foundation Surf Judge – Introduction to Judging Course consists of online learning component with interactive video judging exercises and tests for competency. 

Course Pre-requisites
There are no pre-requisites required for this course.

Accreditations Requirements
To achieve accreditation as a Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Judge participants will need to complete the following courses and have attained the following supporting credentials:

  • Completion of the Surfing Australia L1 Introduction to Judging Course in the Surfing Learning Centre
  • Completion of the ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport Induction’ course located in the ‘My Learning Centre’ portal of your Surfing Australia profile
  • Working with Children Check or Victorian Institute of Teaching Registration*

* Please note: The age requirement for who needs to hold a working with children check varies from state to state in Australia. Check this with your state branch.

Once achieved, the Foundation Surf Judge accreditation has no expiry or renewal fee.

Level 2 – Professional Judging Course

About this Course
The Level 2 Professional Judging Course is the next level of judging achievement and is a professional judging accreditation.

Completing the highest-level Judging course gives the participant access to 2 levels of judging accreditation based around logged hours of experience under the mentorship of qualified State and National Head Judges.

This course focuses on increasing the professional knowledge of the course participants to be able to work in a State and National level competition environment with a complete knowledge of all rules and regulations. Inter-active modules enhance the course participants learning outcomes and will cover all aspects of professional judging and Head judging.

Course Structure
The L2 Professional Judging Course consists of online learning modules with knowledge checks and interactive exercises.

Further to the completion of this course the course participant is required to complete hours of practical judging at State, National or International events.

 

 

Accreditation Requirements
To achieve accreditation as a L2 Progression or Elite Judge, you will need to complete the following course and have the following supporting documents:

  • Completion of the Surfing Australia L2 Professional Judging Course in the Surfing Learning Centre
  • Provide 20 hours of logged judging experience at State, National or International events for Progression judge accreditation and a further 80 hours for an Elite judge accreditation. Hours of experience can be logged prior to course completion.
  • Current Working with Children Check*
  • Current state association membership
