Victoria’s top surfing tradies score great waves at WorkSafe Tradies Challenge presented by Fagg’s Mitre 10 and Belmont Timber

Victoria’s top surfing tradies have gone to work in great waves at Jan Juc today to be crowned the WorkSafe Tradies Challenge presented by Fagg’s Mitre 10 and Belmont Timber champion.

Trades people from all fields converged at Jan Juc beach, fighting for the title of the ultimate surfing tradie in fun 2-3ft waves with light onshore winds.

Apprentice Carpenter Codie Jeffery (Phillip Island) was the day’s standout performer, securing his first Open Tradies title.

Jeffery’s final two wave total of 17.00 (out of a possible 20) was the day’s highest, his two excellent scores proving too strong for his opponents.

“It was good fun Jan Juc” said Jeffery.

“Its such a super fun comp. There isn’t a heap of pressure but it’s awesome just to hang out with everyone at the beach for the day.”

Jeffery defeated former Masters Champion Callan Cross (12.36, Jan Juc), Shane Murphy (7.76, Jan Juc) and Luke Lalor (7.50 Torquay).

Perennial finalist Ross Dart (Mount Duneed) finally cracked an event title after competing in every year of the event, claiming the Masters Tradies Challenge Title.

In an incredibly tight final, Dart bested Blair O’Keefe for second place. Dart finished on a heat total of 13.13 with O’Keefe just 0.13 of a point behind on 13.00.

“There were some good waves throughout the day and all in all a great day” said Dart.

“With a five person final you had to stay busy and i just snuck through with the win which i’m stoked about.”

“To have the support from WorkSafe, Fagg’s Mitre 10 and Belmont Timber is a great way to connect everyone together.”

In third position was Callan Cross (12.17), with Fraser O’Keefe (8.40, Torquay) in fourth. Clayton Allen Atkins (6.60, Marshall) finished in fifth place.

An exciting aspect of the event was the expression session which saw Shane Murphy take out top honours with an explosive backhand re-entry.
