Tough conditions force location change on day one of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp on the Surf Coast

Day one of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp kicked off on the Surf Coast today with tough conditions forcing the event to shift to the protected location of Front Beach Torquay.
 
Strong easterly winds buffeted the coastline creating un-surfable conditions at the primary venue of Torquay Point and backup location of Jan Juc forcing event organisers to make the move.
 
Regardless of the challenging conditions, the next generation of Victorian groms took on the waves in style.
 
Ava Holland (Dromana) was one of the standout surfers in the Under 14 Girls divisions nailing a heat total of 17.50 (out of a possible 20) to put her through to finals day.
 
Holland put together some excellent surfing to lock in a 9.50 wave score in the opening half of the heat before backing it up with an 8 point ride to seal the win.
 
Max Murray (Jan Juc) will be one to watch in the coming years claiming the highest heat total of the day, an incredible 19.30 points in the Under 10 boys division.

Murray locked in a 9.50 and 9.80 scoring rides back to back in his heat and will now move on to finals day on Sunday.
 
Conditions are expected to ease overnight with a call to be made first thing Sunday morning on location. Stay tuned to Surfing Victoria’s Instagram page for updates.
 
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps is the only Australian event series catering for the increasing number of the country’s ‘micro-groms’, with boys and girls preparing to compete in Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 divisions.
 
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
