Open and Masters surfers to highlight massive weekend of surfing on the Mornington Peninsula

Published on 14/01/2021

The Mornington Peninsula will this weekend host both the Victorian Masters Titles and the second round of the Victorian Open Series as surf events resume for the 2021 season.

Kicking off on Saturday, rivalries from the old days will be revived as the Victorian Masters Titles brings together the pioneers of surfing in the state.

With divisions ranging from Over 35 through to Over 60s, competitors are vying for spots in the Victorian Surfing Team set to compete in the Australian Surf Championships later in the year.

Surfers to keep an eye on include former World Tour competitor Brad Gerlach (Jan Juc), Adam Leslie (Jan Juc), Michelle Fincher (Phillip Island), Mark Walker (Mornington Peninsula) and Jamie Reichelt (Mornington Peninsula).

Continuing the weekend on Sunday will be Round 2 of the Victorian Open Series.

The event holds considerable implications as the overall winner is guaranteed a Quarter Final spot in the Rip Curl Pro Trials and a shot at making the main draw of the longest running surfing event in the world.

The field is stacked with former Trials winners including Carl Wright (Phillip Island) and Joe van Dijk (Phillip Island) as well as former Australian champions Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc), Ellie Harrison (Barwon Heads), Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc) and Sage Goldsbury (Phillip Island).

Both days will begin at 8.30am at Gunnamatta. Keep an eye on the Surfing Victoria social pages to updates on location and start times.

Heat draws and live scores can be found at www.surfingvic.com/live

The event will be held under strict COVID19 restrictions including no non-essential spectators and requesting that competitors leave the competition site once they have finished their heat.
