Next Generation of Surfing Stars Take on Solid Surf at Torquay

Published on 11/11/2024

The Victorian Micro Groms Cup presented by Surf Better Now has seen the next generation of surfing stars take on solid surf across the weekend at Torquay.

With a solid swell building throughout the day on Saturday and continuing into Sunday, surfers were treated to 4ft+ surf all weekend with great winds.

Coming in as top seed, Rose Holland (Mornington Peninsula, VIC), was going to be the surfer to beat in the Under 14 Girls division. Holland, who was coming off a Quarter Final finish at the 10,000 rated Rip Curl GromSearch Phillip Island, took to the solid surf with ease looking at home across the opening rounds.

In the final, Holland locked in an excellent 8.00 point ride (out of a possible 10) to give her an unassailable lead ahead of Phillip Island’s Scarlett Rennie.

“I was pretty nervous going into the final, but i’m super happy I won,” said Holland.

“I was pretty tricky out in the surf, but when you got one it was really fun. I love coming to surf in these events, hanging out with all my friends is the best part of it.”

Finishing in third was Stevie O’Day (Torquay, VIC) with Sophie Day (Rye, VIC) in fourth place.

The Under 14 Boys saw Hugo Spierings (Bondi, NSW) dominate the final locking in his final heat total with his first two waves. He finished with a heat total of 16.33 (out of a possible 20), to best George Everist (Mornington Peninsula, VIC) who finished on 13.07 points.

“The waves are pretty much always good around here. Its epic,” said Spiering.

“The waves were super fun. I got a little bit lost at sea out there, but got a couple of waves so im stoked.”

“Im looking forward to doing some more comps and hopefully getting into some of the bigger rated events next year.”

Finishing in third and fourth was Liam Gason (North Steyne, NSW) and Liam Thomson (Torquay, VIC) respectively.

Other event champions on the day included locals Estella Carbonelli and Teddy Robertson in the Under 12 Divisions, Olive Robertson (Torquay) in the Under 10 Girls and brothers Sani and Ronnie Hellman (Ulladulla, NSW) in the Under 10 Boys and Under 8 Mixed divisions.
