Next generation of surfing stars set for massive weekend at the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps

Torquay, Victoria (Friday 13th October, 2023): The next generation of surfing stars is set for a massive weekend at Torquay with the fifth stop of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp set to land on Wadawurrung Country.

Attracting over 50 surfers from across Victoria, the events are a fun and friendly introduction to surfing with divisions from under 8 parent-assist all the way to the under 14 boys and girls divisions.

Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson is excited to see the next generation of surfers on show this weekend.

“This event is a fantastic introduction to surfing competition and a key part of our surfing development pathway” said Robertson.

“It is all about having fun, meeting new people and surfing some great waves. Im looking forward to seeing all of the new surfers coming through and having an epic weekend.”

Improving conditions are expected across the weekend with an increasing groundswell and offshore winds decreasing through Sunday.

Competition will begin at 7.30am at Torquay Point on Saturday with the Under 14 Boys Round 1.

Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
