Lucas and Sara Hickson crowned Open State Champions for 2025

The Mornington Peninsula’s Lucas Hickson has been crowned Open State Champion for 2025 after being victorious at the final round of the Victorian Open Titles on Phillip Island.

Held in pumping large waves at Cape Woolamai, the event saw massive scores and turns over the day that lead to some much watch surfing.

Throughout the day, it was local surfer Harry de Roth (Phillip Island) who was the surfer to beat, consistently posting the highest scores in all of his heats including the highest heat total of the day in his Semi Final (a 16.43 heat total).

However in the final, de Roth was unable to find a strong enough backup score for his heat leading 7.50 and it was Hickson who was able to take the win.

Finishing with a 7.00 and a 3.33, Hickson finished on top of de Roth who finished with a 7.50 and 0.83.

Steve Noble (Cape Paterson) finished in third with Nalu Belyea (Jan Juc) in fourth.

Hickson will now also claim a position in the Rip Curl Pro Trials giving him a shot at the Victorian wildcard into the main event.

On the woman’s side of the draw, Lillian Bassed (Sandy Point) was the in form surfer across the opening round locking in the highest heat total for the event, a 13.00 heat total (out of a possible 20). She will be joined in the final by Sara Hickson (Mornington Peninsula), Sophie Fletcher (Phillip Island) and Chloe Muscroft (Torquay).

Unfortunately due to deteriorating unsafe conditions, the Womens final was postponed and run in conjunction with the No TXT No Wrecks Junior Surfing Titles on the Mornington Peninsula. Sara Hickson was the eventual winner of the series after a strong performance on the Mornington Peninsula.
