Seventy-Two of the finest junior surfers from around the country will descend on URBNSURF Melbourne for the prestigious title of GromSearch National Champion on Monday 6th March. Finalists from the recently completed Australian Rip Curl GromSearch series will be joined by wildcards from the #GromSearchOnline event to enjoy a day of perfect waves in the 2-hectare lagoon.
The Rip Curl GromSearch series began as a single day event in 1999 and has developed into a world-wide series providing groms with the opportunity to surf with friends and test their skills against the best junior talent in the country. The impressive list of previous GromSearch competitors currently competing on the elite WSL world tour is a testament to the quality of the series.
This list includes esteemed surfers such as Tyler Wright, Steph Gilmore, Carissa Moore, Molly Picklum, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Brisa Hennessy, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Italo Ferreira, Kanoa Igarashi, Ryan Callinan, Leonardo Fioravanti, Owen Wright & Sammy Pupo.
The 2023 Rip Curl GromSearch will feature last year’s Under 14 girls Gromsearch winner Isla Huppatz (Bilinga). Huppatz will be coming into this event with a tremendous amount of momentum after taking out a World Surf League QS1000 at the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago.
Other groms to look out for this Monday will be Kai Coleman (Mount Duneed), the Under 12 Boys winner from the Jan Juc leg of the Rip Curl GromSearch series, and Owen Wright’s Under 16 boys #GromSearchOnline wildcard Fletcher Kelleher (Bogangar).
“We’re stoked to see the nation’s best groms return to URNSURF this year,” exclaimed Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson.
“With the consistent high-performance waves produced by URBNSURF, it will be exciting to see the level of performance displayed on the day!”
The event will run at URBNSURF with heats starting at 9:00 am.
