NORTH HAVEN/NSW(August 1st, 2024): The 2024 Hyundai High Performance Centre Australian Surf Championships got underway today at North Haven and it was the Ingenia Australian Bodyboard Titles on the receiving end of pulsing swell conditions for the second year running.

The North Haven Bar had 8ft waves caping and reforming on the beach break north of the break wall, providing competitors with 3-4ft clean waves under an offshore wind.

In the Open Men’s division it was Chase Thompson (NSW), Jesse McIvor (NSW) and Ben Roberts ( VIC) whom stood out in round one of competition this morning. Under 16 and 18 Boys divisions kicked off from lunchtime with Ossian Mackenzie ( NSW) outscoring everyone else in round one of the Under 18’s division, posting an 8.33 point single wave score and a 14.16 point heat total.

Dane Pope (VIC) sent an ominous warning to his fellow Drop Knee division competitors, posting single wave scores of 8.17 and 7.17 points (15.34 point heat total) in round one.

Contest Director Glen Elliott was impressed with the level of surfing on day one and said day two should see conditions improve again.

“The waves have improved as the day has gone on today with competitors utilising the re-forms well. Tomorrow should be better again with the swell easing slightly with best conditions expected as the tide goes out through the morning,” Elliott said.
