Woolworths Junior Surfing Titles kicks off at Gunnamatta Beach in tricky conditions

Published on 15/01/2021

In solid three feet swell the Woolworths Junior Surfing Titles got underway at Gunnamatta Beach. Whilst conditions were tricky, some nice left and right rip bowls were on offer as the banks improved as the day went on.

Taking advantage of the conditions was Charlie Mahoney (Barwon Heads), who posted both a 7 point ride (out of a possible ten) and a 5.67, ending up with a combined heat total of 12.67 (out of a possible 20).

“The conditions were real tricky out there”, Mahoney said.

“It was hard to find a good one, but if you lucked into one they were quite fun” he added.

Another standout performer from day 1 was Sara Hickson (Rye), who took out her opening heats.

Hickson ripped into a couple of right handers and managed to get the job done with some solid power surfing.

Hickson also found the conditions “tricky”, however saw that there was a lot of potential to get good waves and hoped the conditions would be better for tomorrow.

Surf Coast rising star Anna Huppatz (Jan Juc) was hot on her tail but was left chasing a 7.18 to get into the lead.

Huppatz managed to find a couple right handers, however was left unable to find a backup in the dying seconds of their Semifinal.

Others standouts from the day included Willis Droomer (Jan Juc), Charlie Farrer (Barwon Heads) and Sarsha Pancic (Blairgowrie).

Finals day will be held tomorrow (Friday 15th Jan), with competitors to check in at Gunamatta Beach at 8:00 for a 8:30 start.

Heat draws and lives scores can be found at www.surfingvic.com/live across the 2-day event.

The Woolworths Victorian Junior Titles is supported by Coastalwatch, City to Surf Mobile Café, Ramada Resort Phillip Island and Kieser Australia.
