BELLS BEACH, Torquay, Victoria, Australia (Saturday, September 20, 2025) – A full day of action in the Bells Bowl saw Quarterfinalists decided at the Bioglan Bells Beach Longboard Classic, Stop No. 2 of the World Surf League (WSL) 2025 Longboard Tour (LT). Men’s and women’s Round of 16 were completed in the solid six-to-eight-foot swell pouring into one of the world’s most iconic lineups.
While many familiar names moved into the Quarterfinals, multiple surfers pushed through to Finals Day for the first time in many years. For the women, Tully White (AUS) and Hiroka Yoshikawa (JPN) secured their first Quarterfinals berths in three and eleven years, respectively. On the men’s side, Max Weston (AUS) moved into his first-ever Finals Day, while 2017 World Longboard Title runner-up Edouard Delpero (FRA) locked in a return to the Quarterfinals for the first time since the event’s debut in 2023.
Remaining Undefeated at Bells, Soleil Errico Joins Mason Schremmer in Setting the Pace
At the halfway point of the event’s third year, Soleil Errico (USA) remains undefeated. The back-to-back defending winner continued her dominance at Bells Beach today, claiming the highest heat total of the event so far for the women. A slow start kept Errico within easy striking distance of trials winner, 16-year-old Cash Hoover (USA). But the three-time World Longboard Champion, Errico, found an 8.00 (out of a possible 10) over two-thirds of the way through the heat, following it up with an 8.43 picked up seconds before the buzzer for an excellent 16.43 (out of a possible 20) two-wave total.
“It’s so cool to surf with Cash [Hoover],” Errico said. “She’s the next gen, and I think she’ll definitely win a World Title someday. She’s got that ‘it’ factor. She’s a good friend of mine, so it was great to be out there with her. We both were kind of scared, honestly. I was glad to win that heat. That heat was a bit sloppy. I was just paddling for a bunch of waves. But just kept going, kept plowing through it and was telling myself, ‘You got it, keep going.’ But when I got that last wave, I was really stoked because that kind of sealed the deal.”
Mason Schremmer (USA) claimed her first Longboard Tour heat win over Honolua Blomfield (HAW) in dominant fashion. Across three previous high-scoring affairs, Blomfield had always managed to maintain the edge, but today the tables turned. Schremmer’s highly committed nose-rides on huge outside sections earned the highest single-wave score of the day, an 8.50, backed up by a 7.83 for an excellent 16.33 heat total.
“It felt good to put together a few scores, and especially against Hono [Blomfield],” Schremmer said. “She’s probably competitively and all-around one of the best surfers. I definitely look up to her. It was cool to have a heat with her, but I’m glad to get one, finally. I’ve done a couple trips down here when it’s been pretty solid, like one trip in particular that was probably too solid. But I think just kind of putting myself in that position to come and practice a little bit, even when it’s a bit out of my league, it’s helped me figure out where to sit, know what to look for.”
Tully White and Declan Wyton Lead Australian Charge Into Quarterfinals
Australia’s longest-standing woman on Tour, Tully White (AUS), closed out the day with a solid heat win over Sophia Culhane (HAW) to move into her first Quarterfinals since 2022. White backed up her strong Opening Round performance with another excellent ride, an 8.17, showcasing her smooth transitions and patient traditional flow.
“It’s a magic day here at Bells,” White said. “It was such a great day of surfing. There’s so many incredible waves. I’m just so stoked to get to surf it. Big thanks to everyone that makes this event possible because it’s the best. I love it down here. Dec [Wyton] and I actually came down last week. It was really special to be able to come down here a bit early and get used to Bells again. It is a challenging lineup but I’m lucky to have some great support in my corner. It’s a challenging wave but the more time you spend getting sets on the head at the Bowl, there’s something about it that makes you love it more.”
White’s training and traveling partner, Declan Wyton (AUS), completed a near clean sweep for Australian men in the morning. Wyton’s deft nose-riding on large sections, matched with drawn-out carves and smooth flow through a critical finish, picked up a 7.83. Having opened with a 7.50 in his heat against South African Rookie Oliver Packham (RSA), the 27-year-old’s 15.33 two-wave total was the best of the four Australians in the top half of the men’s draw.
“It’s pumping, it’s good when you can look at a forecast and it actually turns up,” Wyton said. “So many times you’ll get to today and it won’t deliver and it has delivered today. It’s cooking out there. You can’t ask for much more.”
Trials winner Clinton Guest (AUS) went down to Rogelio JR Esquievel (PHL) in the first heat of the morning but the following three heats were all about Australia. Melbourne resident Max Weston (AUS) defeated Tour veteran Cole Robbins (USA) in Heat 2 to move into his first-ever Longboard Tour Quarterfinal. Heat 3 featured one of the day’s tightest battles, with Kai Ellice-Flint (AUS) taking on Jack Tyro (NZL). Receiving the last minute call up to compete in his first-ever Longboard Tour event, Tyro held Ellice-Flint’s feet to the fire. The current rankings leader, Ellice-Flint, continued his run however, winning the heat by just 0.07. Wyton completed the picture for Australia with his defeat of Packham and will next face Ellice-Flint in the Quarterfinals.
Relishing the Size, Taylor Jensen and Edouard Delpero Thrive
In 2017, Taylor Jensen (USA) and Edouard Delpero (FRA) faced each other in a surf-off to decide the World Longboard Title in big, unruly surf, seeing Jensen claim his third of four World Longboard Titles. Today, in even bigger conditions, the two veterans were the only men to earn excellent heat totals and set the pace for the field.
The defending winner, Jensen, claimed the highest men’s heat total in the short history of the event, earning an 8.83 and 8.17 for a 17.00 two-wave total. The reigning World Longboard Champion delivered a dominant performance in his defeat of Gavin Idone (USA). Idone, who was appearing in his first Longboard Tour event, struggled to find a score of note while Jensen put on his masterclass. Drawing smooth carves across large open faces, linked seamlessly into critical nose-rides, the 41-year-old looked completely at home in conditions that left much of the rest of the field scrambling.
“I’m happy, of course, the waves are good,” Jensen said. “I mean, this is the stuff I’d be out all day in if I could, if there wasn’t an event. To get this in a heat is magic for me. I just want to go surf more fun waves. I hope it stays like this and just gets cleaner and better and keeps this size there. Look, it’s going to be a great event for everybody. The waves showed up, the sun’s out, we’re on.”
Putting a large emphasis on wave selection, Delpero surfed just two waves, his first a 7.83 and second an 8.40 for a 16.13 heat total. The 35-year-old brand new father committed to long, critical noserides, combining them with his trademark sweeping cutbacks to defeat day two standout Kaniela Stewart (HAW). The heat win secured Delpero’s first Quarterfinals berth since the 2023 Bioglan Bells Beach Longboard Classic.
“I just told myself, I just need two waves and, whether they will come, for sure, one, at least two waves in the heat,” Delpero said. “And yeah, just did my surfing basically and didn’t think too much, just solid section, tried to get the good nose-ride. I felt pretty good on my board actually, and then just finish it properly and it worked well, so I’m so stoked.”
Reigning World Champion Rachael Tilly Continues Consistent Streak to Defeat Local Standout
Reigning World Longboard Champion Rachael Tilly (USA) asserted her consistency in making Finals Day. Since winning her first World Longboard Title in 2015 at the age of 17, Tilly has only missed out on the Quarterfinals of a Longboard Tour event a single time – the 2023 Bioglan Bells Beach Longboard Classic – a stat she was determined not to repeat today. The solid nose and rail work of the 27-year-old delivered an opening 7.50 and 6.00 backup for a 13.50 heat total. Tilly defeated Victorian Beatrice Conroy (AUS), who drew huge local support in an impressive showing that included the highest women’s heat total of day two of the event.
“There’s definitely an expectation I have set for myself to at least make Finals, and that means making top eight,” Tilly said. “So for me, that’s always at least being in the Quarterfinals. It’s not an option to lose before. And so these rounds where I had the Elimination Round and then Round of 16 are always really head down, no option. But I was really excited to surf the bigger swell today and, gosh, that was a lot of hard work out there. Bea [Conroy] is a phenomenal surfer and an even more phenomenal person. I love seeing that type of support down here for every surfer, but Bea especially, she deserves that. And it’s fun to see all the town of Torquay come together and support like that.”
