Surfing Victoria is on the hunt for a new Sport Development Officer to help shape the future of Surfing in Victoria. The role will help build pathways from grassroots to high performance, with a focus on coaching, athlete development, and program delivery for Victorian surfers.

This Role:

The Sport Development Officer will play a key part in shaping the future of surfing in Victoria. Building pathways from grassroots to high performance, with a focus on coaching, athlete development, and program delivery for Victorian surfers. Delivering coaching clinics, supporting Boardrider Clubs, leading Surfing Victoria’s talent development programs, and playing a key role in creating inclusive pathways for the next generation of surfers.

Reports To:

Chief Executive Officer – Surfing Victoria

Location:

Based in Torquay, with travel across regional and coastal Victoria as required.

Employment Type:

Full-Time (negotiable based on experience) with a 6 month probation period.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and lead Progression and High Performance coaching sessions for junior and emerging Victorian athletes.
  • Support athlete tracking, development plans and performance feedback, in line with Surfing Australia’s pathway framework.
  • Support the further development of Surf Better Now, including website content and video reviews.
  • Lead management of all Victorian state representative teams competing at National Titles.
    Coordinate and lead regional and state-based coaching camps and clinics.
  • Mentor junior coaches and provide technical feedback and development.
  • Work with local clubs, surf schools and community groups to build long-term participation and pathways.
  • Manage coaching program logistics, equipment, and seasonal scheduling.
  • Promote and uphold best practices in safety, inclusivity, and surf education.
  • Work collaboratively with Surfing Australia, local councils, and other partners.
  • Support grant reporting, program evaluation, and data collection.
  • Engage internal planning, team meetings, and the delivery of strategic initiatives.
  • Participate and contribute to the delivery of Surfing Victoria events and education programs as required.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Surfing Australia Progression (Level 2) Coaching Accreditation (or working towards).
  • Coaching experience with junior or emerging athletes.
  • Understanding of surfing culture and athlete development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage programs, people, and logistics in a sporting environment.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and project management skills.

Additional Requirements:

  • Flexible availability with some weekend, public holiday and intra state travel required.
  • This position requires you to have a satisfactory driving record, current driver’s license and be willing to drive.
  • Current Victorian Working with Children Check (WWCC).
  • Surf Rescue, First Aid and CPR qualifications.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, child safety and integrity frameworks.
