First Champions Crowned at 2025 Australian SUP Titles

Published on 24/10/2025

PHILLIP ISLAND, VIC (October 24, 2025) – The first batch of national champions have been crowned at the 2025 Australian SUP Titles on the beautiful Phillip Island, Victoria.

Competition commenced on Wednesday the 22nd of October to solid surf and strong winds, but despite the challenging conditions, the nation’s best paddle athletes powered through.

Australian SUP Titles contest director Max Wells is thrilled with how the event has played out so far:

“We’ve had an incredible day of action here on Phillip Island, with Surfing Champions crowned at Surfies Point and the technical race taking place inside the Woolamai–San Remo channel. Today has been a fantastic day, celebrating many new Australian champions!”

Thermos Open Men’s Champion, Matt Takle (VIC), thanked his lucky charms for a cracker wave that came to him right at the last minute:

“I was struggling out there. I got the first one but then couldn’t find much for about ten minutes — I was out of energy. Luckily that last one came through right on the buzzer, and I just did what I had to do. I’m stoked! It’s been an awesome week, and Surfing Australia and Surfing Victoria have put on such a great event. Couldn’t be happier.”

Thermos Open Women’s Champion, Rebecca Dunning (NSW), was stoked to take the win against some younger rivals:

“I’ve been wanting this one for a while, so it feels great to get it done against the young guns. My bottom turn felt really good, but I got the wobbles on the top turn — I’m just stoked I held it together. Phillip Island’s been so much fun this week.”

The final division of the 2025 Australian SUP Title, the marathon race, is set to commence at 8:00am AEDT Saturday 25th October.
