2024 Australian SUP Titles underway on Phillip Island, Victoria

PHILLIP ISLAND, VIC (October 23, 2024): The 2024 Australian SUP Titles have kicked off on Phillip Island, Victoria, with a full day of surfing in one-to-four foot waves at Smiths Beach.

The event officially started last night with an Opening Ceremony. Hosted by Phillip Island Boardriders Club, there was a great turnout and camaraderie between athletes before competition got underway this morning with Round 1 SUP surfing heats completed.

20-year-old Indy Rose (Avalon Beach, NSW) posted the highest single wave score of the day, a 9.00 (out of a possible 10) in the Open Men’s division.

“Everyone was frothing and pretty happy. The size has consistently grown all day, ” Rose said.

“I was looking for some mid range sets that would hold up. For that 9.00 it was the right spot at the right time. I managed to hit a few nicely, and finish off with a nice lip line into the flats. It was a good start to the competition, puts you in a good mindset.

“I won a state title and came second at nationals last year at Sussex Inlet so I’m still chasing the win at nationals. I’ve had a good year, so hopefully, I can keep that going.”

IsiCampbell (Denmark, WA) was a standout in Open Women’s, comboing her opponents.

“Conditions today started out small and onshore and by the time my heat commenced this afternoon it was large and onshore 3-4 foot unruly conditions only offering one or two manoeuvres. I was very happy with my first round at a national level.”

Contest Director LiamRobertson said: “Tomorrow, we’re expecting a further increase in swell and winds. The swell will open up a few different surf break options, and we’ll be able to make the most of the waves on offer on beautiful Phillip Island.

The next call will be at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow, with Right Point, Surfies Point, and Smiths Beach as potential locations, starting with Round 2 SUP surfing heats.
