Over 170 of the best Under 18 surfers from across the country have arrived on Bunurong Country for the inaugural Phillip Island Junior Pro presented by Bass Coast Shire Council.
As a 10,000 point Marquee event on the Surfing Australia National Rankings, the event is only one of four events of this caliber in the country and will provide surfers with valuable rankings points in their quest for a spot in the Irukandjis team heading to the ISA World Junior Surfing Titles.
Top seed in the Under 18 Girls division, Isla Huppatz (Gold Coast, QLD) is looking to cement her spot on top of the Surfing Australia National Rankings with a solid result at Phillip Island.
“I like coming to Phillip Island, the waves are always fun and its such a beautiful place!”
“ The waves are really raw and powerful and should be really fun.”
“Hopefully I can get a good result in some good waves.”
In an exciting addition, surf fans from across the country will be able to tune in to the final two days of the event with a new partnership with Kommunity TV. Every wave will be streamed live via Kommuity TV across NewCorp Mastheads across Australia.
Victorian hopeful and 2021 U/16 World Champion Willis Droomer (Jan Juc, VIC) will be looking for a strong result in front of a home crowd.
“Im pumped to be going to Phillip Island to compete,” said Droomer.
“There are some amazing waves over there and to be able to compete in front of a home crowd will be heaps of fun.”
“I missed out on some of the bigger events up north, so this will be a good chance to get some points for the National Rankings.”
Competition is set to begin tomorrow morning with an Opening Ceremony and Traditional Smoking Ceremony at Penguin Parade at 7.30am before competition kicks off at 8.30am.
Steve Dimopoulos MP, Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events said it’s fantastic to welcome the newly created Phillip Island Junior Pro to the Bass Coast.
“We are proud to support this exciting new event for Phillip Island as we welcome Australia’s best junior surfers to a picturesque part of our state, helping shape our future surfing champions.
“Thanks to the Significant Sporting Events Program, the Pro will be another great event for Bass Coast and another major event for regional Victoria.”
There is a large swell forecast for the opening days of the event which will force competition to the Penguin Parade on the opening day.
Daily calls for competition on start times and locations will be distributed via Surfing Victoria’s Instagram page.
